Building a Peaceful Tomorrow for Future Generations:
Global Hibakusha Testimonies
Monday, June 17
1:00-5:00 pm
777 United Nations Plaza, 2nd Floor
Join Peace Boat and the United Nations #Youth4disarmament Initiative on the afternoon of June 17 for an event titled, “Building a Peaceful Tomorrow for Future Generations: Global Hibakusha Testimonies.” The event will feature personal stories of two atomic bomb survivors, one from Hiroshima and one from Nagasaki, as well as a Downwinder from Utah, who is also traveling on Peace Boat to share her experience as a survivor of nuclear testing. They are a part of the “Peace Boat Hibakusha Project – Global Voyages for a Nuclear-Free World: Beyond Borders and Generations.” The atomic bomb survivors are aging, and hearing their personal accounts of their experience as survivors is a unique experience to understand the true costs of these indiscriminate weapons. These first-hand accounts are imperative to pass on to the next generation to build a strong global community of young nuclear disarmament activists. In addition, the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs will present their #Youth4Disarmament initiatives and share how youth can get involved in the program. Finally, the event will conclude with a film screening of “The Vow from Hiroshima,” which will be introduced by the director and producer who followed Hibakusha and international activist Setsuko Thurlow’s life’s work calling for a world free of nuclear weapons.
