Peace Boat US recently completed our latest Youth for the SDGs Program, June 25 – July 20, 2024, as part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The program took place onboard Peace Boat’s 117th Global Voyage, sailing up the Pacific coast of North America, visiting Manzanillo (Colima, Mexico), Vancouver (BC, Canada), Ketchikan (Alaska, US) and Seward (Alaska, US). This was our second Youth for the SDGs program of 2024; you can read about the first 2024 program here (January 20-February 10).

While sailing from Mexico to Alaska, five youth leaders visited numerous partners in ports of call working on ocean and climate action through initiatives such as Blue Economy programs in Manzanillo and the Ocean Wise Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPS) project in Vancouver. Youth leaders learned about their efforts to protect the pristine natural resources, kelp forests and biodiversity within the Pacific Coast region and efforts to mobilize and empower local communities for ocean and climate action.

Participants also conducted water quality tests in each port of call in collaboration with the citizen science program EarthEcho International. The data was shared with the IOC UNESCO platform entitled ODIS – Ocean Data Information System as part of our contribution to the UN Ocean Decade and education for SDG 14, Life Below Water.
