Peace Boat is an international NGO that works to promote a culture of peace and sustainability around the world by connecting people across borders and creating opportunities for learning, activism, advocacy and cooperation, primarily through voyages carried out onboard its passenger ship, the Pacific World. The programs enable participants to learn first-hand about global issues such as ocean conservation, environmental degradation, gender equality, and other issues.

This February the Peace Boat will visit Chile as a part of its 119th Global Voyage, carrying out the “Youth for the SDGs” program, which promotes ocean conservation within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and endorsed by IOC UNESCO. The ship will arrive at the port of Punta Arenas on February 7 and Valparaiso on February 12, where it will host an event. This is the second voyage to Chile and Argentina with this ship, carrying 1,800 passengers on board. Its journey began in Tokyo, Japan and is traveling primarily around the Southern Hemisphere, visiting 17 ports in 13 countries.

Peace Boat is excited to host a Blue Innovation event celebrating the city of Valparaiso, nominated as the Secretariat of the High Seas Treaty, also known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement. Because of its leadership, commitment to marine conservation and the strategic location of Valparaiso, Chile has been nominated as the host of the “High Seas Treaty” Secretariat. Chile was one of the first countries to sign and ratify the treaty, which aligns with their own ocean policy and foreign policy initiatives on ocean affairs.

During the program in Chile the ship will visit the ports of Valparaíso and Punta Arenas, where our “Youth for the SDGs” Program  will carry out a series of activities in collaboration with international and local organizations, coastal communities and government authorities to promote innovative solutions towards sustainability and ocean protection. These activities will include beach clean-up projects, educational workshops on the importance of oceans and marine life, studies on climate change and the impact on the region’s glaciers, inspiring presentations by environmental leaders and other actions to promote awareness and action in ocean conservation. In addition to marine conservation activities, Peace Boat’s voyage will offer opportunities for cultural exchange, global learning and intergenerational dialogue.

The “Youth for the SDGs” Program brings together students between 18 and 30 years old from different countries, for an immersive educational program in Patagonia from Ushuaia, Argentina, sailing through Antarctica and then traveling to Punta Arenas and Torres del Paine National Park. Also participating in this group is Chilean Peter Hartmann as a special guest speaker from the organization CODEFF – the National Committee for the Defense of Flora and Fauna of Chile, which seeks to promote the conservation of Patagonia. Together with other local Chilean organizations, they are developing a program to promote marine protected areas for Patagonia. Peace Boat and its program “Youth for the SDGs” invite the media and the community at large to join this initiative and participate in the activities planned in the ports of Valparaíso and Punta Arenas. Together we can make a difference and work for a sustainable future in harmony with our ocean.
