Sailing for Sustainability and Climate Action

September 22, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm UTC-4

This year, Peace Boat and the Ecoship Project will be part of the Climate Week in New York City, the international event that gathers business and government leaders together to continue the transition toward net zero emissions. The Climate Group will convene the annual Climate Week NYC from September 19-25, bringing together hundreds of delegates from around the world for business and government panel discussions, workshops, academic seminars, exhibitions and artistic productions, covering the key themes of the climate change agenda. Peace Boat activities during Climate Week will offer a taste of the next visit of the ship to the city. On October 20th, Peace Boat will host a public event onboard the ship, inviting the New York City community to learn more about Peace Boat’s Ecoship Project, its initiatives for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and its three decades of innovative voyages and programs.

During Climate Week, Peace Boat will introduce its Ecoship Project, the world’s most sustainable cruise ship. Planned to sail in 2020, the 55,000 ton, 2000 passenger capacity nature-inspired vessel combines radical energy efficiency measures and the use of renewable energy at a level never achieved before in maritime transport. The ship will collaborate with different institutions and NGOs to raise awareness of climate change. During this event, Peace Boat will announce future partnerships. This initiative is part of a broader range of activities by Peace Boat to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The NGO is an official campaigner for the SDGs and is working to inspire civil society and governments each country visited during its voyages to engage in reaching the goals. As a symbol of its support, the official UN SDGs “Global Goals” logo was recently painted on the side of the current ship.
