DESCRIPTION:It is now one month since the Russian military invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. Already\, more than 3.5 million people (90% of whom are women and children) have had to flee from their homes to other countries as refugees\, and it is estimated that a further 6.5 million people have been displaced within Ukraine. This total of 10 million people represents close to one quarter of Ukraine’s population\, and an unprecedented humanitarian crisis is now being faced. \nThe Peace Boat Disaster Relief Centre (PBV) has begun support activities for the affected populations\, working in coordination with our partner in Romania\, the Peace Action\, Training and Research Institute of Romania (PATRIR) who have been active in humanitarian aid since immediately after the aggression began. \nA team of 3 staff members was dispatched from Japan to Romania on March 19\, and they have been confirming the needs and situation on the ground. DESCRIPTION:April 19: Earth Day Initiative\nThis Earth Day 2021 virtual event provides a space online for attendees to learn from environmental organizations and sustainable businesses\, connect with one another\, and hear from speakers about what comes next in this pivotal year.  A full line-up of speakers and presentations will explore issues like green living\, sustainable business\, and community-building around environmental issues. Peace Boat will host a booth here in the virtual networking space with other environmental NGOs.  The program will feature prominent climate activists\, scientists\, celebrities\, community leaders\, performers\, and public officials in an interactive line-up of panels and discussions.  Last year’s event included Bill Nye\, Elizabeth Warren\, Al Gore\, Joseph Gordon-Levitt\, climate scientists\, activists\, and Broadway performers and they will be announcing this year’s full line-up soon!\nFor more information: earthdayinitiative.org/2021-events
